Behaviour Problems

I recently had an e-mail about dog behavioural problems. Alex Witmond sent it on to me as this person had written to The WTC. I have sent Weltos replies to this person even though she isn't a member as I believe everyone should get help and we are all so very passionate about our breed. It is so important that your puppy gets the right training from day one as it can otherwise cause difficulties later on.

I have a question for the members of WELTOS about Ruby.

Ruby has always been very good with other dogs and loves people. When we go for a walk either on or off the lead, she'll spot someone walking and she will go over to them so that they will make a fuss of her. If the dog looks friendly she will want to play with it. All is fine until their dog comes to me for a stroke. Ruby then changes and starts to warn the other dog off by snarling and snapping. She never used to be like this and it has only started over the last few months.

I have stopped making a fuss of other peoples dogs to prevent a confrontation.

Does anyone else have this problem with their WT and any ideas to stop it as its not very pleasant?
